Hi there! I’m Emily Thomas from The Wix Collective, and today I’m excited to walk you through how to use the Wix Site Theme in the Wix editor. If you’ve ever wondered how to make cohesive, site-wide design changes without starting from scratch or editing every single element individually, this tutorial is for you. I’ll show you exactly how to adjust colors, fonts, backgrounds, and more, all with just a few clicks.
Why You Can’t Swap Templates in Wix (And What to Do Instead)
First off, it’s important to know that Wix doesn’t allow you to swap between templates once you’ve started building your site. While this might feel limiting, it actually makes sense when you consider how customizable and flexible Wix is. The editor lets you tweak nearly every element, so instead of swapping templates, you can use the Site Theme to make global changes across your website.
This means you can update your entire site's look — colors, fonts, backgrounds, and transitions — all in one place without losing your content or redesigning each page one by one.
Accessing the Site Theme Settings
Let me show you how to find and use the Site Theme in Wix.
In the Wix editor, go to the Site Design menu.
Click on Site Theme. This opens up all the theme customization options for your website.
Here, you’ll see the theme that’s currently applied to your site. In this example, I’m using a simple two-page website template I created specifically for service-based businesses. Exploring the Site Theme Options
Within the Site Theme menu, you can adjust several key design elements:
Color Theme
Text Theme
Page Background
Page Transitions
These settings control the overall look of your website and affect every page automatically.
Using Preloaded Wix Themes for Inspiration
You can also browse through Wix’s preloaded site themes by clicking the Site Theme dropdown at the top of this panel. While these won’t be perfect out of the box, they’re a great way to get inspiration or find a base to customize further.
Try selecting a theme you like about 60% and then customize it further to make it your own.
How to Customize Your Color Theme
For more detailed control, head to the Color Theme section. Here’s what you’ll find:
Base Colors:Â This is the background color of your website.
Darkest Color:Â Typically used for main text or headings.
Accent Colors:Â Colors used for buttons, highlights, and other design accents.
You can edit any color by clicking the three dots next to it and selecting Edit. For example, if I wanted to change all my accent colors from green to red, I can do that with one click. Anywhere I used the green accent color will automatically update to red.
While changing all the colors to red here doesn’t look right, this feature is incredibly useful when you want to quickly rebrand a template or try out new color schemes without manually changing every element.
Adjusting Your Text Theme
The Text Theme works similarly to the color theme. You can change your entire site’s fonts in one place.
Just click into the text theme menu, select the font you want, and it will update across your entire website — headings, paragraphs, and buttons included.
Changing Your Page Background and Transitions
You can also change the background for all your pages at once, whether it’s a color, an image, or a video. This helps maintain consistency across your site and saves you from having to update each page individually.
Additionally, page transitions can be adjusted to control how your site’s pages animate as visitors navigate through them.
Important Tips for Using Wix Site Theme
When I first started editing Wix websites, I didn’t use the Site Theme properly. Instead, I changed individual buttons or elements manually to whatever color I wanted. Here’s the catch:
If you later update your Site Theme colors, those individually customized elements won’t change — they’ll stay the same because they’ve been customized outside the theme.
For example, if you manually change a button to yellow and then update your Site Theme colors, that button will remain yellow unless you reset it to use the theme colors.
So, my advice is to always use the Site Theme for fonts and colors when building or customizing your site. This way, if you decide to change your overall look later, everything stays consistent and updates automatically.
All of my templates are designed this way, using only Site Theme fonts and colors, so changing the theme is seamless and keeps your site looking polished.
Wrapping Up
Using the Wix Site Theme is one of the smartest ways to maintain consistency and save time when customizing your Wix website. Whether you’re starting fresh with a template or tweaking an existing site, mastering the Site Theme settings will make your design process smoother and more efficient.
